Cartographic Tutorials

There were a lot of useful tools in this tutorial in creating an informative and visually appealing map. Leaning to set definition queries was also an important skill to learn in order to visualize the desired information. The layout that was created is visually appealing but I feel that it is not the most presentable if it were to be used as an informative poster. The light color of text that is very similar to the background color along with the 'Insert Map' in the bottom right makes it a bit more difficult to see the information if it were displayed at a conference or in a presentation.

    I agree with you on several of these points, Caroline! This exercise definitely helped me to become more comfortable with definition queries as well, so that was useful. It also just opened up my eyes to a number of tools that it is good to know about for future reference, but the process of clicking through so many tools definitely meant that I was not absorbing them fully. Finally, I definitely agree with you about the design choices--I find the color usage on this map quite difficult to decipher and wonder if the map-making guides didn't prioritize "prettiness" over legibility!

    This was a great exercise, while it took what felt like forever I thought that it was much easier over all to complete.

Project Update

 I have run into a few issues with content that is available for my project to be able to answer this questions I had hoped to. To begin, I hoped to incorporate the Ground Penetrating Radar survey that indicated enslaved housing, though the problem I have run into is not only the fact that this survey was done in the 1990s but also that the maps the surveyors provided had no real life context to connect the data too. I've included a photo of the type of map that was produced during this survey, this is very disappointing because this information is very important to my project but more importantly to the history of the site.  Given this information I will still try to compare the location of the four known tenant sites to the mansion, I will include historical maps to see which of these homes were mapped throughout the years which will help with understanding of how long these structures were standing. Project Proposal

 For my final project I would like to examine the placement of tenant homes around the Gist mansion on Rose Hill Plantation in Union, South Carolina. Post emancipation many previously enslaved individuals continued to live and work on the land they were tied to but now as tenant farmers, sharecroppers, and wage laborers. The same was true for Rose Hill Plantation, there are fourteen known tenant farmer homes that were associated with the property, though only four of these house sites have been excavated and have recorded gps points for their location. Another important question regarding this site is, where were the enslaved cabins located? Over the course of 128 years of this plantation being in use, 280 individuals were enslaved on the property. I have found reports of ground penetrating radar being done and locating evidence of structural remains of enslaved housing.
